Festival of Easter Study
We will be reading four lectures from Rudolf Steiner's book:
FESTIVAL of EASTER, GA 233a, given in Dornach in 1924.
Rudolf Steiner leads us to an understanding of the true meaning of Easter by tracing its history from the pre-Christian era to our time. He shows it is ultimately through knowing the true significance of Easter that we come to understand our relationship to spiritual reality.
Lectures 1, 2, and 4 will be read individually at home,
one each on:
3/27 Wednesday | Lecture 1 |
3/28 Thursday | Lecture 2 |
3/29 Friday, 7PM | Lecture 3* |

100th Anniversary of the Society / Foundation Stone Challenge
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the General Anthroposophical Society and the "laying of the Foundation Stone" on December 25th, 1923.
To commemorate, reflect upon, and pour renewed efforts into this momentous event, we would like to propose a challenge and invitation to members and those interested in exploring anthroposophy further, of working with the Foundation Stone meditation daily during this December of 2023.
The founding of the Society in 1923, called the "Christmas Conference", was sealed with a meditative verse from Rudolf Steiner called "The Foundation Stone Meditation". This profound verse is a concise panorama of anthroposophy.
The words: verse, poem, prayer, and mantra are different words to describe what is essentially the same: a tool we can use in our spiritual practice for the purpose of going inward; for the mind: as concentration and meditation; for feeling: as art, beauty, devotion and whatever may awaken; and for will: in how our personal resolve can be strengthened in practice.
Mantra (devanāgarī: मन्त्र) is a Sanskrit word coming from the > root man- (manas, "to think" or "mind") and the suffix -> tra, ("tool" or "instrument"), meaning the "instrument of > thought".
From the Anthroposophy Wiki:
..the mantras given by Rudolf Steiner are primarily thought mantras, which can also have an effect when translated into other languages in meditation, as is also the case with the Lord's Prayer:
“The Lord's Prayer is a prayer that is not a mantram as such. It will still have its meaning after thousands and thousands of years have passed because it is a thought mantram. The effect of the Lord's Prayer was poured into the thoughts, and just as true as it is that people can digest quite well without having to ask a physiologist to tell them what the effect of the digestive process consists of, it is just as true that the person who prays the Lord's Prayer feels the effect of the Lord's Prayer, even if he does not allow it to be said to him. The effect of the Lord's Prayer is there because it lies in the power of the thoughts themselves." --GA 96
In addition to how the Foundation Stone can be used for individual practice, it goes without saying, in and of itself it is connected in a practical way with the impulse and outpouring of anthroposophy in the world.
We would like to invite/challenge you to spend a short time with this verse daily
during this Advent season
Ideas for practice:
- You can recite the verse aloud or silently
- You can focus on one specific portion at a time or do the whole thing each day
- It may be more effective if you pick a specific time of day to do this
- You can keep a journal for what stands out to you or comes up each day
- You can go up until Christmas (the 25th), or Epiphany (Jan 6th).
During our holy nights studies, which will last from 12/26 to 1/6, you will have the opportunity to share your experiences with the verse, as well as continue the practice with the group.

Celebration of the Holy Days and Nights
From Jesus to Christ
Ten lectures given in Karlsruhe
October 5-14, 1911
By Rudolf Steiner
In these lectures, Rudolf Steiner shows how the Mystery of Golgotha can be seen as the pivotal event of human history, and the Gospels as initiation documents that can help us on a path of spiritual development. He demonstrates how the religious streams of Zarathustra and Buddha helped prepare the way for the events of Palestine.
Rudolf Steiner's emphasis is on rediscovering the esoteric path to Christ and of awakening to the new revelation breaking through in our
time: Christ as the Lord of Karma.
Daytime gatherings begin at 1:00 pm: Dec. 26-29, Jan. 1 & 6
Evening gatherings begin at 7:30 pm: Dec. 30, Jan. 2

Shepherds' Play Reading
Thursday, December 21, 7pm
At the Waldorf School of San Diego
3547 Altadena Avenue, SD.
One of the most beautiful and meaningful celebrations of the Christmas festival is
the study, practice and performance of one or more of the Oberufer Plays. The
Shepherds Play portrays the birth of Jesus in a stable, where he is sought out by a
group of shepherds.
For hundreds of years, ordinary people in the small Austrian village of Oberufer
on the Danube gathered in the local tavern at Christmastime to perform plays for
their neighbors. With their roots lost in medieval times, the plays gradually
evolved to incorporate a unique blend of folk humor and profound reverence in
their celebration of the birth of Jesus.
Towards the end of the 19th century Professor Schröer spoke to Rudolf Steiner
about these plays. His enthusiasm and concern about the possible loss of such
precious folkways touched Steiner, who quickly realized their beauty and
proceeded to bring order to the sketchy script and the music. In 1910 the first
revived performance took place in Berlin, Germany.
From then on, these plays have become part of the Christmas time tradition for
many Waldorf schools all over the world. They were first translated by Cecil
Harwood, from England, who tried to keep intact the medieval way of speaking—
the simple beauty of expression.
Finding Hope and Re-Imagining America:
Working Toward a New Tri-Sectoral Imagination of the American Future
A Workshop with Christopher Schaefer
Saturday, January 25, 2020 9am-12pm
How did we get to the place where our politics are manipulated and bought, our freedom threatened by fake news and mass surveillance by the government and the internet giants and our economy hi-jacked by the rich and powerful? What factors have led to the corruption and decline of our nation which was once the “fact, the symbol and the promise of a new beginning” for millions of immigrants and provided hope and opportunity for many of its citizens? Together we will explore the following questions:
• How can we find an inner and outer balance while witnessing the
turbulent times in which we live?
• What are the main factors which have led to the corruption and
decline of American Society?
• How can we protect and extend human freedom, assure equal
rights and a true democracy and create an economy which serves
human needs and aspirations while protecting the earth?
• What can we do individually and collectively to move toward a
society which our hearts long for and which our heads tell us is
needed if we are to save ourselves and the earth?
We will work on these questions in pairs, small groups and in the whole circle, allowing participants to choose which of three areas they wish to work on: fostering human freedom, restoring democracy and equal rights or creating an economy which serves people and the earth. Chris will also share some of his conclusions about a possible new Tri-Sectoral Covenant between the American people and their society.
Christopher Schaefer, Ph.D, taught International Politics and Economics at M.I.T. and
Tufts before helping to found the Waldorf School in Lexington, Mass. He and his wife
Signe then went on to teach at Emerson College in England, where he co-founded the
Centre for Social Development, and for many years also at Sunbridge College in Spring
Valley, N.Y. In addition to being the author of Re-Imagining America: Finding Hope in Difficult Times and Partnerships of Hope: Building Waldorf School Communities, he co-authored Vision in Action: Working with Soul and Spirit in Small Organizations. He is a father and grandfather and lives in the Berkshires of western Mass.

Decades of Talking about Social Change:
An Evening with Christopher and Signe Schaefer
Friday, January 24, 2020, 7:30 - 9 pm
For over 50 years, Chris and Signe Schaefer—former Sunbridge College program
directors and longtime friends and supporters of Waldorf Schools—have been
discussing and working for social change. Their ongoing conversation—on whether
change happens through systemic and structural transformation, through individual
development, or is reliant on both—is reflected in their two new books.
This evening will be a dialogue about human development, social transformation,
and the struggles of our times, with short readings from the Schaefers' two new
books*.
*Signe’s latest book is I Give You My Word: Women's Letters as Life Support,
1973-1987. She is also the author of Why on Earth? – Biography and the
Practice of Human Becoming, as well as a co-author of Ariadne’s
Awakening and co-editor of More Lifeways.
Chris’s new book is Re-Imagining America: Finding Hope in Difficult Times. His
previous books include Partnerships of Hope: Building Waldorf School
Communities and Vision in Action: Working with Soul and Spirit in Small
Organizations.
About the Schaefers
Chris and Signe Schaefer each have a long history of teaching, first
at Emerson College in England and then, for many years, at
Sunbridge College in New York, where Signe directed the
Foundation Studies and Biography programs and Chris directed the
Waldorf School Administration and Community Development
program; they also both served on the Sunbridge Board. In the years
since, Signe co-founded the Center for Biography and Social Art,
and Chris, an organization development adviser who also taught at
MIT and Tufts, has facilitated organization and community
development with Waldorf schools and other institutions; he is also
co-director of the Center for Social Research at the Hawthorne
Valley Association. Now retired from teaching, they live in Great
Barrington, Mass.

Music includes works by JS Bach, Zoltan Kodaly and Phillip Glas
Eurythmy w/Speech by Bruce Laurelin and Elizabeth Sevison-Olley
Piano Accompaniment by Mark Polesky
Verses and Meditations by J. Masefield, Rudolf Steiner
“In fact, everything that takes place in human beings through the outer world can be
perceived by the spirit, including human souls who have passed through the gate of
death….The dead can experience with us what we experience in the physical world.
This is because these experiences belong not only to our world but also to theirs. Our
experiences belong to their world when we thoroughly spiritualize what we experience
in the outer world with spiritual ideas. Otherwise, what we experience as the effects
of matter remains dark and incomprehensible to the dead. To the dead, a soul devoid
of spirit is a dark soul. This is why the dead have become estranged from earthly life.
We must overcome this estrangement. The so-called dead and the so-called living
must learn again to live together inwardly…..” Rudolf Steiner, Cosmic and Human
Metamorphoses.

The Abbey at Mont San Michele has been one of the most beloved pilgrimage sites for
over a thousand years. Placed on the Norman Camino Route, it is part of an ancient
star network of mystery centers from megalithic times. The modern abbey has had
numerous iterations ranging from a Druid Goddess center to a Mithraeum and
several generations of Christian architectural presentations.
Michael appeared to the Bishop of Avranches in the early 8th century and bid him to
build a shrine on the island in the sea. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a rich
history in the spiritual evolution of Christianity.

Stephanie Georgieff has just returned from a lecture tour featuring Mont San Michele. The workshop
will include her research on how the Archangel Michael and the Templars figure prominently in our
modern era as agents of transformation and initiation along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

to have the opportunity of exploring the script and learning
about Rudolf Steiner’s efforts to bring a Threefolding Order
of society into the chaotic situation of Europe after WWI.
The final part of the play shows how in April 1919 Emil Molt
asks Steiner to assist him in opening a school for the
children of the employees of his Stuttgart Waldorf Astoria

and thus came about the birth of the Waldorf Schools.

THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
A Talk Presented by RICH GRAMS
Friday, September 28th at 7:30
Waldorf School of San Diego 3547 Altadena Avenue San Diego, CA 92105
There is a deep and remarkable relationship between humans and the machines that we use to supplement our lives. The conversation about the future of machines and human consciousness not only fascinates but falls far short of the perspective which Anthroposophical Spiritual Science is capable of bringing to the discussion. In an evening with ideas derived from Rudolf Steiner, Sergei Prokofieff, Valentin Tomberg and a multitude of other sources including original spiritual research, I will attempt to deepen that conversation with a set of ideas that I have not heard discussed in any other venue. I will deliver a perspective on sources, developmental trajectories, research principles and practices intended to create a platform of understanding which individuals can use in reconciling their need to use technology in our daily lives with the haunting suspicion that it harbors an evil which might engulf our culture and inner lives.
Rich Grams is a life-long student of philosophy and explorer of several esoteric traditions. For the past 25 years he has immersed himself in self-study and meditation on the work of Rudolf Steiner. Rich is a member of the Viroqua Anthroposophical Group and lives in La Crosse, Wisconsin

Concerning the birth of the idea of the Threefold Social Organism in 1917-1919
Tuesday, September 4th at 7:00 PM
At the Fallbrook Library
124 South Mission Road, Fallbrook 92028
Rudolf Steiner launched the idea of the Threefold Social Organism (Threefold Social Order) in 1917 in the hope that this would help shorten the war and prevent another great conflagration from breaking out at a later date. The times were against him then and he was unsuccessful, but the question of the hour is: "Did what Steiner attempt in those years plant a seed that has waited a hundred years to mature in our own age?"
