The San Miguel Branch represents the Anthroposophical Society in America in San Diego, California.

The Anthroposophical Society in America is one of more than seventy autonomous national societies. These support the General Anthroposophical Society founded by Rudolf Steiner in Dornach, Switzerland. The Society is a non-profit, non-sectarian association which accepts members without regard to religious, political, national, financial or other personal affiliations.

What is the Anthroposophical Society and Movement?

The General Anthroposophical Society was founded in Dornach, Switzerland, in 1923. The founding statutes are available online here:

https://www.goetheanum.org/en/members/foundation-statute-of-1923

They are also referenced in “The Christmas Conference” (GA260), along with important details and commentary. All are encouraged to take some time to read the statutes, even if one is already familiar with Anthroposophy, already a member or firmly decided on becoming one.

Here are some excerpts:

"1. The Anthroposophical Society is to be an association of people whose will it is to nurture the life of the soul, both in the individual and in human society, on the basis of a true knowledge of the spiritual world."

"2 … [They are] convinced that there exists in our time a genuine science of the spiritual world, elaborated for years past, and in important particulars already published; and that the civilisation of today is lacking the cultivation of such a science. This cultivation is to be the task of the Anthroposophical Society."

...and from the America Society:

The Anthroposophical Society in America is a non-profit, non-sectarian association devoted to furthering the work of Rudolf Steiner. The only requirement for membership is that you acknowledge the value of Rudolf Steiner’s work in the world. You may choose to participate in the activity of the Society at whatever level interests you.

How to join and/or support the work of the society?

Support for the Society exists at various levels:

1. Society Membership

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Anthroposophical Society, membership is mediated in most cases at the National / Country Society level. For those living in the United States this is the Anthroposophical Society in America. You may find information and the means for joining the National Society at their website. Membership fees are annual, and range in cost based on financial means.

There are over 40 thousand members of the Society worldwide and 36 national societies.

2. Local Support: The San Diego Branch

Support on a local level. You may support the San Diego branch with or without being a member of the society. Furthermore, donations to the local branch do not constitute membership in the Society, nor do they need to. Nonetheless, a branch cannot exist without a budget, and our local chapter depends upon the generous support of its participants and friends. Our branch is an extension of the American Society and charitable donations to our local work fall under funds directed towards our local efforts within the American Society. We invite annual support from our "Friends of the Branch" to help us sustain our local budget.

3. The School of Spiritual Science

Membership in the School of Spiritual Science. For those who have been a part of the Country Society for at least 2 years, it is possible to become a member of the School. Actual membership in the school is mediated through Dornach, the international center for Anthroposophy. Members of the School may then attend Class-work wherever it is being undertaken. San Diego is also a location where this work is available, and members do currently participate here. There is no cost involved with being a member of the School.

4. School Sections

Members of the School and, in some cases, even without yet being a member, can become involved with the "Section Work", where collaborative research into various domains of cultural and artistic work is carried out. More information about the section work can be found at the following links:
